FREESCALE
Microcontrollers, embedded processors and MEMS sensors – legacy brand now within NXP
About the manufacturer
Freescale Semiconductor was a major semiconductor manufacturer serving automotive, industrial, consumer and communications markets. The company was created from Motorola’s semiconductor operations and developed a broad portfolio that included microcontrollers, embedded processors, analog and power devices, communications ICs and MEMS sensors. Freescale components became widely used in embedded platforms and long-life industrial and vehicle electronics.
Among its best-known technologies were microcontroller families for control applications, i.MX application processors for embedded computing and multimedia systems, and MEMS sensors for motion and orientation measurement. The breadth of the portfolio allowed designers to build complete embedded platforms around processors, sensing, connectivity and power-management devices supplied under one semiconductor brand.
Freescale merged with NXP in 2015, and current development and product support are now carried under the NXP brand. The Freescale name nevertheless remains visible on many installed components, service parts and established designs. When maintaining or redesigning equipment based on legacy Freescale devices, engineers should check current lifecycle status, NXP replacement recommendations, software compatibility, package availability, peripheral behavior and qualification requirements rather than relying only on headline processor or sensor specifications.
Applications
Freescale devices remain common in established embedded and industrial designs, especially where processors, microcontrollers or motion sensors are required.
FREESCALE products available from Maritex
The Freescale-related range available from Maritex includes MEMS sensors and components used in embedded platforms. The catalogue includes accelerometers such as MMA7455L and MMA8451QT, while Freescale i.MX processors are also used in industrial computers and modules offered by Maritex.
Available product groups include:
For legacy Freescale devices, product status and the current NXP equivalent should be checked, especially in new designs and when planning long-term availability.
