Bipolar junction transistors (BJTs) are semiconductor electronic components that enable current flow control and signal amplification. How Do Bipolar Junction Transistors Work?

BJTs consist of three semiconductor layers and operate by controlling the current flow between the collector and emitter using a base current. This functionality allows them to act as signal amplifiers or switches in electronic circuits.

Key Parameters of BJTs:

Configuration type – NPN or PNP.
Current gain (hFE) – determines how much the transistor can amplify an input signal.
Collector-emitter voltage (Vce) – the maximum voltage the transistor can withstand.
Collector current (Ic) – the maximum current that can flow through the transistor.
Switching time – crucial for applications requiring fast response.

 

Types of Bipolar Junction Transistors

NPN and PNP Transistors

  • NPN – conduct current when the base receives a positive voltage.
  • PNP – conduct current when the base receives a negative voltage.

Darlington Transistors

Comprising two BJTs, these transistors offer high current gain and are used in motor controllers and audio amplifiers.

Power Transistors
