New Cosmos Electric – CSD-04 and CSD-05 Hydrogen Detection Modules Announced

Maritex has established a partnership with New Cosmos Electric, a Japanese manufacturer specializing in gas detection technologies. The first solutions announced under the new partnership are the CSD-04 and CSD-05 on-board hydrogen detection modules. Both products are currently under development, with production expected to begin in September 2026 according to the current schedule.

New Cosmos Electric – More Than 60 Years of Gas Detection Expertise
The roots of New Cosmos Electric date back to 1934, while the present company was established in Osaka in 1960. Just one year later, it began developing gas sensors, and in 1964 it launched the world’s first household combustible gas alarm based on a catalytic combustion sensor. Over the following decades, the company expanded its portfolio to include portable and fixed gas detection systems, residential safety products, and automotive modules.
A major milestone in its hydrogen technology development came in 2020, when an on-board hydrogen detector was adopted for the Toyota MIRAI. Today, New Cosmos Electric conducts research, development, manufacturing, sales, and maintenance of gas sensors and alarm systems, residential fire alarms, portable gas detectors, odor sensors, and air quality monitoring products.
CSD-04 and CSD-05 – Fast Hydrogen Leak Detection for Vehicles
The CSD-04 and CSD-05 modules are designed to detect even small hydrogen leaks in fuel-cell vehicles (FCVs), hydrogen internal combustion engine vehicles (HICEs), and other platforms using hydrogen as an energy carrier. Typical installation points include the hydrogen storage tank, hydrogen piping, fuel-cell stack, and vehicle cabin.
Both variants use the proven catalytic combustion principle and provide a detection range of 0–40,000 ppm. Their mechanical design and core performance are identical; the main difference is the output interface: CSD-04 supports CAN communication, while CSD-05 provides a PWM output.
Key Features
- Very fast response – T90 ≤ 3 s.
- Hydrogen detection range from 0 to 40,000 ppm.
- High sensitivity, selectivity, and accuracy: ±10% at concentrations of 10,000 ppm and above.
- High durability and enhanced resistance to silicone poisoning thanks to proprietary catalyst technology.
- Flexible 8–32 VDC supply and CAN (CSD-04) or PWM (CSD-05) output.
- Wide operating temperature range from -40 to +105°C.
- IP67 or equivalent enclosure protection.
- Compact dimensions of 80 × 82.4 × 25.5 mm and a weight of approximately 62 g.
Applications
- hydrogen-powered passenger cars and racing cars,
- heavy-duty trucks and buses,
