Optocouplers
Optocouplers (also known as optoisolators or optosensors) are semiconductor electronic components that use light to transmit electrical signals while providing galvanic isolation between different circuits. Their main function is to protect sensitive components, eliminate ground loops, and improve signal quality in control systems, data processing circuits, and power electronics applications.
How Do Optocouplers Work?
An optocoupler consists of two main components:
✔ LED (Light Emitting Diode) – generates light when current flows through it.
✔ Photodetector (phototransistor, photodiode, phototriac, or photoresistor) – receives the light and converts it into an electrical signal.
With this design, the signal can be transmitted between circuits without any physical electrical connection, ensuring isolation and protecting the system from voltage surges and electromagnetic interference.
Key Parameters of Optocouplers
✔ Isolation voltage – the maximum voltage the optocoupler can isolate (e.g., 2.5kV, 5kV, 10kV).
✔ Input current (If) – the minimum and maximum current required to activate the LED.
✔ Current Transfer Ratio (CTR) – the ratio of output current to input current, indicating the optocoupler's efficiency.
✔ Propagation delay – the switching speed, crucial for high-frequency applications.
✔ Output type – phototransistor, phototriac, photodiode, or logic-level TTL/CMOS outputs.
Applications of Optocouplers
Optocouplers are widely used in industrial electronics, automation systems, and power supplies where electrical isolation and circuit protection are required.
🔹 Relay and inverter control isolation – protects microcontrollers and control circuits.
🔹 Overvoltage protection – eliminates ground loops in RS-232, RS-485, and CAN communication systems.
🔹 Thyristor and triac control – used in light dimmers, power regulators, and inverters.
🔹 Industrial automation and IoT – isolation between PLC controllers, sensors, and measurement systems.
🔹 Automotive electronics – protects engine control units (ECU), ABS systems, and motor controllers.
🔹 Switching power supplies and power electronics – isolates control signals in DC-DC converters and voltage regulators.
