MEAN WELL SKM/DKM W8 – one DC-DC converter for multiple system voltages

In modern electronic designs, power conversion is no longer only about efficiency and reliability. For many manufacturers, it is also about simplifying logistics, reducing design complexity and making future product upgrades easier. This is exactly where the new MEAN WELL SKM/DKM W8 isolated and regulated DC-DC converter series fits in. The family includes 10 W, 15 W, 20 W and 30 W models in a compact 1” x 1” package and expands MEAN WELL’s 8:1 ultra-wide input DC-DC portfolio, following earlier SIP and DIP24 package solutions.

The key feature of the new series is its 9–75 Vdc input range. With one converter type, designers can cover common 12 Vdc, 24 Vdc and 48 Vdc system voltages. This helps simplify model selection, reduce inventory variety and improve design flexibility for devices intended for different power architectures or markets.

For manufacturing companies, this can be a practical advantage. Instead of maintaining several product variants for different input voltage ranges, a design can be simplified already at the BOM stage. Fewer part numbers, easier purchasing and more straightforward service planning can translate into real savings across R&D, procurement and serial production.

What does an 8:1 input range mean in practice?

Previous DC-DC converter generations often required separate models for 2:1 or 4:1 input ranges, such as 9–18 Vdc, 18–36 Vdc, 36–72 Vdc, 9–36 Vdc or 18–75 Vdc. The new W8 generation, with its 8:1 9–75 Vdc range, can replace multiple earlier variants in many applications.

This is particularly useful when a device may operate in different power environments, for example in industrial automation, communication equipment, distributed instrumentation, IoT systems or DC bus-powered electronics.

Upgrade without changing the PCB layout

Another important benefit of the SKM/DKM W8 series is its pin-to-pin compatibility with the previous generation. In many existing designs, this may allow engineers to upgrade to the new generation without modifying the PCB layout. For electronics manufacturers, this can shorten implementation time, reduce redesign risk and make the modernization of existing products much easier.

Key features of the MEAN WELL SKM/DKM W8 series

The new converters are designed for stable operation in demanding applications. The series offers a 1” x 1” package with a global standard pinout, natural convection cooling, an operating temperature range from -40°C to +90°C, no minimum load requirement and protections against short circuit, overload, overvoltage and undervoltage. Selected models comply with EN55032 Class A without external components, while the series includes EAC, CE and UKCA certifications and a 3-year warranty.

The isolated and regulated design is also important. In industrial applications, galvanic isolation can help improve system robustness, reduce the impact of electrical noise and support safer operation of control, measurement and communication electronics.

Where can SKM/DKM W8 converters be used?

According to MEAN WELL, the new products are suitable for power equipment, electronic instrumentation, communication systems, industrial automation control and IoT applications. In practice, this means a very broad range of use cases – from control modules and operator panels to measurement devices, telemetry systems, communication equipment and monitoring solutions.

For electronics manufacturers, the main advantage is versatility. A single converter type can support different input voltage variants, making it easier to design scalable product platforms and reduce the number of qualified components in the purchasing process.

Maritex – authorized MEAN WELL distributor

As an authorized MEAN WELL distributor, Maritex supports customers not only in purchasing power supplies and DC-DC converters, but also in selecting suitable solutions for specific applications. The SKM/DKM W8 series is a strong option for companies designing or upgrading electronic devices that require a compact, isolated DC-DC converter with a wide input voltage range.

When designing equipment powered from 12 V, 24 V or 48 V DC buses, it is worth considering the new MEAN WELL SKM/DKM W8 converters and comparing them with currently used models. Thanks to pin-to-pin compatibility and the 9–75 Vdc input range, they can help simplify both the design process and later serial production.
